Ōtautahi / Christchurch act The Response are stepping into a defining new chapter — and they’ve turned the volume all the way up. Formed by Andy and Victoria Knopp, the band built their reputation on carefully crafted indie releases: melodic hooks, electronic textures, and emotionally resonant songwriting all created entirely in-house. Their 2025 album Novel Idea showcased that meticulous approach, earning praise for its atmosphere and detail. But their latest singles Where Do You Run To? and Hollow Hour change the conversation.
Taking a bold left turn that embraces a grittier, more propulsive sound, Where Do You Run To? — a fuzzed-out rock anthem that spent nine consecutive weeks at #1 on the New Zealand rock radio charts, is fueled by snarling guitars, a bassline with real swagger, and a chorus ready to ricochet off festival stages. The track marks the beginning of a more rock-centric era, bringing a new intensity without losing the songwriting core that got them here.
That evolution is just as evident on stage. Fresh from playing packed venues while touring Australia and New Zealand supporting Transvision Vamp, The Response have been winning over new audiences with sharp live chemistry and instantly memorable songs. Now, with the addition of drummer Guy Cowan (Fazerdaze, Tom Lark), their live show has transformed into something more physical and high-impact — amplifying the urgency of their new material.
